According to Walsh, Venice, having forgotten about Carnival for 120 years, reinvented it as a tourist attraction in 1979 with such spectacular success that no self-respecting Venetian would now be seen dead there. That doesn't mean you wouldn't have a great time, of course, but should make you feel a bit better if you forgot to book sufficiently in advance.
