According to the referendum exit poll, over 70% of Greek Cypriots have voted 'no' to the UN plan for reunification of the island. Turkish Cypriots have voted in favour. Only the southern half of the island will now join the European Union on May 1. Click here for the CNN story or read on.

The Islamic Council of Spain has lodged a formal request for Muslims to be allowed to worship in the Córdoba mosque, which contains the city's cathedral. To the general glee of the tourism sector, Jack Straw has presented the annual Review of Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice, which recommends that the FCO should change its criteria for travel advice. In particular, intelligence-related blanket travel bans (i.e., terrorism warnings) should be reduced to a minimum by applying them to “severe and imminent threats” only.

The only thing they all have in common is that they are small, both in size and in population. Of the points Socialist candidate José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero made today during his speech to Spanish Congress prior to the vote on his election as president of the government, the one most likely to capture the attention of the international press is the repetition of his intention of withdrawing Spanish troops from Iraq by June 30 unless the UN takes control of the country. This is undoubtedly significant, but the low level of the Spanish military presence in Iraq means its importance is mostly political. In terms of real, lasting effect, Zapatero's undertaking to shift foreign policy closer to Spain's natural area of influence, Europe and the Mediterranean, without forgetting South America, will matter more.
