Palestine

Unlike most of the Mediterranean Blue Country Facts pages, the following is taken from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Country Profile of the Palestine National Authority.
Recent History:
Between 1967 and the formation of the PA to administer Gaza and Jericho in May 1994, the West Bank and Gaza Strip were run by a military administration under the direct control of the Israeli Minister of Defence. The West Bank Municipal Councils set up under Jordanian law continued to operate after 1967 but were increasingly subject to the intervention of the military administration. Elections due in 1980 were postponed indefinitely by the Israelis and in 1981 a Civil Administration was set up to 'administer the civilian affairs in the region'. The Civil Administration was to have been disbanded after the inauguration of the Palestinian Legislative Council in 1996 but many features of it remain in place.

In February 2003 Mahmoud Abbas was nominated as Prime Minister, and a new Cabinet was set up. On 6 September 2003 Mahmoud Abbas resigned, and Ahmed Qurei was nominated as Prime Minister designate. On 7 October 2003, President Arafat appointed an emergency Cabinet under Ahmed Qurei. A full Cabinet will be presented to the Palestinian Legislative Council for approval, after a 30 day period.
