Lebanon - Introduction

Posted by: John Ross on February 24, 2004 4:43:36 PM
Lebanon
In its origins, Lebanon was the home of the Phoenicians. It is a prosperous country, largely because its location makes it a natural trading centre. Its mix of religions has caused strife in the past, and a civil war was waged there on and off between 1975 and 1991. Syria still maintains an occupying force there, with the consent of the Lebanese parliament. Lebanon has been an important tourist centre and Beirut is recovering this role.

Jordan - Introduction

Posted by: John Ross on February 24, 2004 4:32:57 PM
Jordan
Jordan is a relatively new country, to a certain extent an artificial one, but has a splendid historical heritage and a lot of natural attractions. Its stability and well developed tourist infrastructure give it an extra appeal to travellers who would like to see the Middle East but are reluctant to go to other countries there.

Italy - Introduction

Posted by: John Ross on February 23, 2004 8:25:21 PM
Italy
In spite of having the richest historical heritage in the world, Italy is relatively young as a state, and in some ways is still unconsolidated. It contains great geographical and climatic contrasts, running north-south as it does from the Alps to Sicily. Wherever you choose to go, it is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding countries in Europe for tourists and other visitors.

Greece - Introduction

Posted by: John Ross on February 23, 2004 7:51:03 PM
Greece
Once the centre of a great ancient culture, modern Greece is a classic tourist destination, combining the lotus-eating appeal of its islands and coastline with the attraction of its history. This year, 2004, is especially important as the Olympic Games are to be held there for the first time since the modern Olympics began, in 1896.

Map of France
France is the world's most visited tourist destination, receiving nearly 80 million visitors a year. Some of the reasons are its position, slap-bang in the middle of Western Europe; attractive, highly varied countryside and scenery; culture and historical attractions; and, of course, its capital, Paris, one of those must-see places people often fall in love with and return again and again.

Egypt - Introduction

Posted by: John Ross on February 18, 2004 4:49:42 PM
Egypt
Although Egypt is one of the most populated, prosperous and correspondingly influential countries in Africa, its position and culture put it squarely in the Middle Eastern region in political terms. It has been a tourist destination ever since ancient Romans and Greeks marvelled at its pyramids and other exotic sites, and still has an allure few other countries can rival. Cairo is a dizzying experience, places like Luxor and the Valleys of the Kings and Queens are unforgettable, and a Nile cruise can be a journey of a lifetime.

Cyprus, like Malta, Madeira and Majorca, was one of the first places to see the benefits that could be brought by the post-war mass tourism phenomenon. Its appeal to tourists was only slightly reduced by the Turkish occupation of the north of the island, which divided not only the island, but even its capital, Nicosia. Fortunately, this situation looks likely to be resolved in the near future as the island comes closer to entry in the European Union.
